Washington DC, (AHN) - U.S. and Swedish researchers have identified a gene region which may increase the danger of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
RA is auto-immune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints.
The study was conducted by researchers of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and other groups.
The study showed the genetic differences in blood sample from people with RA compared to controls became possible.
According to the report, through a candidate -gene, Researchers identified the TRAF1/C5 region on Chromosome 9 as a susceptibility trait and severity factor for RA.
The report added that the TRAF1-C5 region was the third of three major susceptibility chromosomal regions for RA identified by their whole genome screen.
The other two regions, HLA-DRB1 and PTPN22, had already been well recognized.
Researchers expressed hope that they can find ways to manipulate treatment for RA.
This study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine. (ANI)
