Sacramento, CA (AHN) - The California Department of Public Health has warned consumers not to eat Barrilito and Miguelito Mexican candies, after potentially harmful levels of lead were found in them.

Dr. Mark Horton, director of the public health agency on Wednesday advised infants, young children and pregnant women about short- and long-term exposure to lead-contaminated candy. Lead can lead to learning, behavioral and other neuro-developmental disabilities.

Barrilito is thick, dark brown syrup that is sold in a clear glass jar. Miguelito is a reddish-orange powder packaged in clear plastic. Montebello-based TJ Candy Corp., which distributes the sweets, has initiated a voluntary recall.

The health agency is warning all consumers in possession of these candies to dispose of them. Anyone who finds Miguelito or Barrilito candies for sale is encouraged to call the CDPH Complaint Hotline at 1-800-495-3232.
