New York, NY (AHN) - New York City released a report saying the reason a fast-food restaurant passed inspection despite two complaints about rat-infestations is because of an inspector's "lack of diligence."
In a months time two complaints were filed about a KFC/Taco Bell restaurant in Greenwich Village about issues with rodents.
In January a customer said a rat fell from the ceiling of the restaurant while they were eating. A month before than security cameras caught rats scurrying about the restaurant.
The health inspector reported he found 87 rat droppings but did not include the 20 additional droppings that would have shut down the restaurant, according to the Department of Investigators.
The health department reported that the city should focus more on conditions that foster infestations rather than complaints about rodents. IT added that the city has a problem with responding to complaints.
However, the Department of Investigators "found a disturbing lack of diligence on the part of the public health sanitarian who inspected the restaurant as well as a breakdown in the supervision of the inspector.
The department's report went on to say that the health inspector "underreported the rodent-related findings and failed to take proper action ... which constituted a 'gross dereliction' of her duties."
Yum Brands Inc, parent company to KFC and Taco Bell apologized for the rodents and said it would take appropriate steps to ensure more infestations do not occur.
