The Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dixit flagged off a cycle rally on Tuesday in order to create an awareness about the upcoming Commonwealth Games next year. The rally, called the Commonwealth Games Awareness Cycle Rally was also an attempt to create awareness about the environment.

The rally was organized by the Delhi Knowledge Development Foundation under the aegis of the Department of Training and Technical Education (DTTE).

The 9 mile rally saw the participation of around 200 students and 50 faculty members from 15 technical institutions in Delhi.

Chief Minister Dixit said on the occasion, "My blessings to the students of various institutions participating in this rally, which not just involves fun and enjoyment but also encourages sports spirit. it will motivate the people of Delhi to connect with the upcoming Commonwealth Games."

V.K. Jain, additional secretary of the DTTE said, "It is a matter of great pride for all of us that Delhi will be hosting the Commonwealth Games 2010. The purpose behind this cycle rally is multifold - it aims to create awareness about the Games, sportsman spirit as well as the use of cycle."

The other aim of the rally was to create awareness about a carbon footprint. And how to achieve a healthier and greener way of life with a non-polluting commuter vehicle like the cycle.

V. Shrimali, Deputy Director of DTTE and the man leading the rally said, "Cycle is a pollution free commuting vehicle and this is the point we wanted to drive to today's generation. Also today's fast paced life means we all eat a lot of junk food. Cycling is a great way of keeping healthy and keeping the environment healthy too."

The DTTE plans to organize many such rallies all over the country in the coming few months.
