Washington, DC (AHN) - The Food and Drug Administration began enforcing a new ban on selling certain flavored cigarettes last week, sending warning letters to companies it says that continue to sell them.
The enforcement effort is part of recent powers given to the agency by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which tasks the FDA with regulating tobacco products. The bill bans most flavored cigarettes, except for menthols.
The bill was passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama in June. The ban went into effect on Sept. 22.
The FDA is also looking into tobacco products sold over the Internet to consumers in the United States.
The FDA said on its Web site that it is also encouraging people to turn in companies still selling the flavored smokes.
