Bangladesh Seeks International Cooperation To Prevent HIV /AIDS

Dhaka, Bangladesh (AHN) - Bangladesh on Thursday sought enhanced international cooperation and partnership to prevent and control HIV/AIDS worldwide.

Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dipu Moni made the observation when Dr. Nafis Sadik, Special Advisor to the U.N. Secretary General on HIV / AIDS in Asia and the Pacific called on her at the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka.

They discussed human rights, HIV/AIDs, child and mother health, child mortality, family planning, women empowerment, reproductive health issues and literacy, according to a foreign ministry press statement.

The foreign minister said Bangladesh is one of the vulnerable countries and the government has taken a number of steps to prevent and control HIV/AIDs in the country.

Nafis Sadik appreciated that HIV / AIDs program has been successful with national HIV prevalence still below one percent among high-risk population groups in Bangladesh.

Dipu Moni emphasized on the importance of enhanced international cooperation and partnership to prevent and control HIV /AIDS worldwide.

She also said having common borders with high prevalent countries like India and Myanmar, Bangladesh is vulnerable to HIV / AIDS due to legal and illegal migration and practice of unsafe behavior.
