Davis, CA, United States (AHN) - Researchers with the University of California, Davis, have good news for beer drinkers. The malty beverage may be good for their bones.

The researchers said in a new report published in the February issue of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture that beer is a significant source of dietary silicon, which is a key ingredient in building bone mineral density.

The researchers said in a statement that silicon in beer is present in the soluble form of orthosilicic acid. The report said beer is a major contributor of silicon in the western diet.

The authors said moderate beer consumption may help fight osteoporosis, a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.

The researchers said beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops have the most silicon.
