Paris, France (AHN)-The French Cabinet is mulling making breathalyzer tests mandatory for people leaving bars and nightclubs across the country in order to prevent alcohol-related accidents.
The proposed decree came on the heels of a fatal Pentecostal holiday weekend on French roads, with at least 17 fatalities reported in seven accidents. In one, four people aged between 15 and 26 were killed when the car in which they were riding went off the road near Forbach, in eastern France.
The driver, according to police, had been drinking.
France's cabinet is to hear a proposal to make breathalyzers mandatory when it meets on Monday. Ecology and health ministers would jointly present a draft decree that applies to all such establishments remaining open until 2 a.m. Some 350 cafes and bars in western France have already run trials, according to Ecology Minister Jean-Louis Borloo.
Borloo said he hopes to have the law in effect by this summer.
