Washington, DC, United States (AHN) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people to beware of health risks associated with swimming in public pools this summer.
According to a new report from the agency, about one of eight public pool inspections conducted in 13 states in 2008 resulted in immediate closures because of serious code violations.
Inspections of child care facility pools had the highest percentage of closures at 17.2 percent. This was followed by hotel/motel pools and apartment/condominium pools at 15.3 percent and 12.4 percent respectively.
Baby pools and interactive fountains had the highest percentage of disinfectant violations, according to the CDC report.
Swimming in pools with improper disinfectant and pH levels can lead to serious gastrointestinal illnesses.
